Labor Day weekend first test of new DWI law s effectiveness

Highway safety advocates will use this holiday weekend as their first barometer to judge the effectiveness of a new law that increases penalties for driving while intoxicated. And the new law means that people who need to drive after being arrested for DWI for the first time could be forced to install expensive ignition interlock devices for at least 90 days. That stretches to a year for a first-time conviction. The law, which went into effect Aug. 15, also increases the length of time people convicted of DWI will have their licenses suspended.
